Description
First Aid is any emergency care given to an injured or ill patient before Professional medical services arrive. This could be an Ambulance Officer, Doctor, Nurse, Paramedic. It is the care a person applies as soon as possible after an accident or sudden illness.
The aims of First Aid are:
To Preserve Life - this includes everyone, the casualty, bystander and rescuer To Protect the Unconscious - ensuring the area is safe To Prevent the Condition Worsening – includes providing pain relief To Promote Recovery - and provide reassurance To Seek Medical Assistance
It is important to remember that First Aid does not take the place of professional medical treatment, it has its limitations.
The First Aid course comprises of 2 components – online and practical (face to face). You need to complete and be deemed competent in both components to be awarded the National Units of Competency -
- HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support
- HLTAID011 Provide first aid
Once the course is booked and paid, you will receive an email confirmation with your username and password which will give you access to the online learning component. Please note that the online component needs to be completed prior to attending the practical face to face training.
Component 1 - Online:
Here you will be provided the theoretical basis for providing immediate assistance to an injured or ill person. There are a total of 12 sections in the learning materials.
Sections:-
Introduction to First Aid Basic Life Support Breathing Emergencies and Drowning Cardiac Emergencies Wounds and Bleeding Shock and Altered Conscious States Burns Environmental Impact Musculoskeletal Injuries Poisoning, Toxic Substances and Needle Stick Injury Bites and Stings After the Incident
Each section is followed by an assessment. In order to proceed to the next section, you will need to have successfully answered all assessment questions in each section.
You have unlimited attempts to complete each assessment. The pass mark for each assessment is 100%.
Upon successful completion of the online component of the course, you will be able to print your Certificate of Completion.
Component 2 - Practical (face to face):
First aid is primarily a practical skill and here you will be trained in and practice a variety of First Aid skills. The trainer will cover resuscitation and various scenarios relating to providing First Aid and throughout the day you will be required to demonstrate your ability to apply the skills being taught.
IMPORTANT: Please ensure you bring your Certificate of Completion from the online component of this course to the practical training day.
